The below link will take you to a sermon by Charles Spurgeon preached at the Metropolitan Tabernacle in 1863. The topic is
Peace and the scripture expounded is:
“Therefore, being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Rom. 5:1.
It is a horrific thing for a created being to come to the realization that he is at war with his Creator. God is against you and will destroy you if you do not find salvation in His son!
The Peace Which the Believer Enjoys
The peace which most rest upon is a false peace of self-justification. What is the grounds of true peace? It is not in a reformed life, “because By the works of the Law there shall no flesh be justified” (Gal 2:16). If we ground our peace in our works, we have a temporary peace, because our works will fail. We must find our comfort in on this only, this is that we are justified by our faith – we must look solely to Christ alone, based on what He has done on our behalf, and take Him in faith for our peace.
“Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.” Rom 8:34 (KJV)
Peace With God is Through Jesus Christ
So, if we are justified by faith in Christ, then our comfort is in our faith. No! Faith is the channel through which our justification and peace comes, but the source is Jesus Christ! If we receive our justification through faith in Christ, we have our comfort by continual rest upon and meditation on Him. The more we come to Christ and learn of Him, the more peace we have.
That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. Eph 3:17-19 (KJV)
The Certainty of Peace
Where the Bible says we ARE justified by faith, let us not say we HOPE we are. It is not prideful to take the Promiser at His Word, rather it is prideful to doubt the One who promised. Once we have taken Him at His word, there is nothing left to be anxious of or doubt.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me… Ps 23:4 (KJV)
If you are not a saint, then you are a sinner. If you are a sinner, good news! Christ came into the world to save sinners. Are you backslidden? Return to Christ in Faith and you will have the joy of your salvation! Do you not know Christ and you have no peace – do not seek peace, seek Christ and He will give you peace.
He asks of you nothing but that you would take all gratis from His liberal hand. And will you please remember that if you put your eye on anything but Christ, or anything with Christ—so as to disturb your whole thought and attention from being directed exclusively to Him—then peace will be an impossibility to you…Do not trust your repentance! Do not trust your faith! Do not rely upon your feelings! Do not depend upon your knowledge…Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you shall be saved. But if you believe not, trust where you may, you shall be damned. God help you to believe in Christ for His name’s sake. Amen.
