Galatians 2:1-10 Text w/Notes

Ἔπειτα διὰ δεκατεσσάρων ἐτῶν πάλιν ἀνέβην εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα μετὰ Βαρναβᾶ, συνπαραλαβὼν καὶ Τίτον· 2 ἀνέβην δὲ κατὰ ἀποκάλυψιν· καὶ ἀνεθέμην αὐτοῖς τὸ εὐαγγέλιον ὃ κηρύσσω ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν, κατ’ ἰδίαν δὲ τοῖς δοκοῦσιν, μήπως εἰς κενὸν τρέχω ἢ ἔδραμον. 3 ἀλλ’ οὐδὲ Τίτος ὁ σὺν ἐμοί, Ἕλλην ὤν, ἠναγκάσθη περιτμηθῆναι· 4 διὰ δὲ τοὺς παρεισάκτους ψευδαδέλφους, οἵτινες παρεισῆλθον κατασκοπῆσαι τὴν ἐλευθερίαν ἡμῶν ἣν ἔχομεν ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ, ἵνα ἡμᾶς καταδουλώσουσιν· 5 οἷς οὐδὲ πρὸς ὥραν εἴξαμεν τῇ ὑποταγῇ, ἵνα ἡ ἀλήθεια τοῦ εὐαγγελίου διαμείνῃ πρὸς ὑμᾶς. 6 ἀπὸ δὲ τῶν δοκούντων εἶναί τι, ὁποῖοί ποτε ἦσαν οὐδέν μοι διαφέρει· πρόσωπον () θεὸς ἀνθρώπου οὐ λαμβάνει ἐμοὶ γὰρ οἱ δοκοῦντες οὐδὲν προσανέθεντο, 7 ἀλλὰ τοὐναντίον ἰδόντες ὅτι πεπίστευμαι τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τῆς ἀκροβυστίας καθὼς Πέτρος τῆς περιτομῆς, 8 ὁ γὰρ ἐνεργήσας Πέτρῳ εἰς ἀποστολὴν τῆς περιτομῆς ἐνήργησεν καὶ ἐμοὶ εἰς τὰ ἔθνη, 9 καὶ γνόντες τὴν χάριν τὴν δοθεῖσάν μοι, Ἰάκωβος καὶ Κηφᾶς καὶ Ἰωάννης, οἱ δοκοῦντες στῦλοι εἶναι, δεξιὰς ἔδωκαν ἐμοὶ καὶ Βαρναβᾷ κοινωνίας, ἵνα ἡμεῖς (μεν) εἰς τὰ ἔθνη, αὐτοὶ δὲ εἰς τὴν περιτομήν· 10 μόνον τῶν πτωχῶν ἵνα μνημονεύωμεν, ὃ καὶ ἐσπούδασα αὐτὸ τοῦτο ποιῆσαι.

διὰ δεκατεσσάρων ἐτῶν διὰ + gen. of time denotes passage of time, “after”, δέκα = ten, τέσσαρα = 4 δεκατεσσάρεσ = 14 (Mt 1:17, 2 Cor 12:2, Gal 2:1), ἔτοσ – year, so “after 14 years” ; ἀνεθέμην2aor mid ανατίθημι, in middle form to declare, communicate, refer, lit. “place upon”, i.e. to lay something before someone (BAGD) ; κατ’ ἰδίαν adv. privately, by oneself (BAGD 4); τοῖς δοκοῦσιν Dat. Pl. Ptcpl, to be influential, be recognized, to think oneself to be something, have a reputation (BAGD 2b), to be reputed, to be held to be something (LSJ), vss 2,6,9, ; μήπως (μή πως in WH,NA) lest in any way, and after Verbs of fearing, lest perchance, freq. in Hom. (LSJ), introduces an indirect question (BAGD 2), expresses apprehension ; ἠναγκάσθη3S Aor Pass. of ἀναγκάζω, w/inf. is to compel or force to do something (inf), see vs 14 ; παρεισάκτους secretly brought in, smuggled in, snuck in (BAGD), παρά + εἰσάγω ? (Strongs), see προσείσαγω/προσεισέρχομαι ; παρεισῆλθον 2aor of προσεισέρχομαι, slip in, come in (with unworthy motives) as in Rom 5:20 (BAGD), closely related to προσείσαγω, which is to bring in secretly or maliciously, (2Pt 2:1) ; κατασκοπῆσαι spy out or lie in wait for (BAGD), note: a κατάσκοποσ is a spy (LSJ) ; καταδουλώσουσιν (καταδουλωσωνται in TR/MT), fut. enslave τινά (2 Cor 11:20 – “… put in bondage”, KJV) ; πρὸς ὥραν time, period, season, hour; the proper time, opportunity (Middle LSJ), for a very short time, for a moment (BAGD 2aβ) ; εἴξαμεν aor. τινά, to yield to someone ; (ὁ in WH/Tisch, bracket in NA)προσανέθεντο 2 aor. mid., add or contribute τινί τι (BAGD, see 1:16 ; τοὐναντίον adv. w art, “on the other hand”, see 2 Cor 2:7, (BAGD 2 of ἐναντίον) ; στῦλοι pillar or column, see I Tim 3:15 ; μεν (in MT)αὐτὸ τοῦτο αὐτὸ used as intensive pronoun in predicate position (DM 137,138), just this or this very same thing (BAGD 1h) ;
