Galatians 1:11-17 Text w/Notes


11 Γνωρίζω δὲ ὑμῖν, ἀδελφοί, τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τὸ εὐαγγελισθὲν ὑπ’ ἐμοῦ ὅτι οὐκ ἔστιν κατὰ ἄνθρωπον· 12 οὐδὲ γὰρ ἐγὼ παρὰ ἀνθρώπου παρέλαβον αὐτό, οὔτε ἐδιδάχθην, ἀλλὰ δι’ ἀποκαλύψεως Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ. 13 ἠκούσατε γὰρ τὴν ἐμὴν ἀναστροφήν ποτε ἐν τῷ Ἰουδαϊσμῷ, ὅτι καθ’ ὑπερβολὴν ἐδίωκον τὴν ἐκκλησίαν τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ ἐπόρθουν αὐτήν, 14 καὶ προέκοπτον ἐν τῷ Ἰουδαϊσμῷ ὑπὲρ πολλοὺς συνηλικιώτας ἐν τῷ γένει μου, περισσοτέρως ζηλωτὴς ὑπάρχων τῶν πατρικῶν μου παραδόσεων. 15 ὅτε δὲ εὐδόκησεν ὁ ἀφορίσας με ἐκ κοιλίας μητρός μου καὶ καλέσας διὰ τῆς χάριτος αὐτοῦ 16 ἀποκαλύψαι τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ ἐν ἐμοὶ ἵνα εὐαγγελίζωμαι αὐτὸν ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν, εὐθέως οὐ προσανεθέμην σαρκὶ καὶ αἵματι, 17 οὐδὲ ἀνῆλθον εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα πρὸς τοὺς πρὸ ἐμοῦ ἀποστόλους, ἀλλὰ ἀπῆλθον εἰς Ἀραβίαν, καὶ πάλιν ὑπέστρεψα εἰς Δαμασκόν.

Γνωρίζω to make known or reveal, Γ. τινί τι, ὅτι … ; εὐαγγελισθὲν aor. ptc. pass ; ὑπ’ ἐμοῦ ὑπό w/gen. + pass verb denotes agent or cause, “by” ; κατὰ ἄνθρωπον κατὰ + acc = place, time, purpose, or relationship, here = “according to” or “in conformity with” ; οὐκ …οὐδὲ…οὔτε οὐδὲ is used to join two negative clauses, in οὐκ…οὐδὲ, οὐδὲ resumes οὐκ, according to Smyth οὐδὲ…οὔτε is rare, means “not…nor…nor yet”? (Smyth 2932, 2939, 2941) ; ἐδιδάχθην aor pass. ; ἀναστροφήν way of life, conduct, behavior (I Pet 1:18) ; ποτε temporal, at that time (DM 236); καθ’ ὑπερβολὴν κατά w/acc. indicates kind, nature, or characteristic (BAGD II.5.b.β). ὑπερβολὴ w/κατά denotes to an extraordinary degree, beyond measure, utterly (BAGD) ; ἐπόρθουν impf. πορθέω pillage, destroy, annihilate, tendential imperfect? (DM 177(1), Zerwick 203-204), conative imperfect (Smyth 1895) ; προέκοπτονimpf. of προκόπτω, π. εν τινί means to go forward, make progress in something (Lk 2:52) ; ὑπὲρ + acc. excelling over, surpassing over and beyond ; συνηλικιώτας a person of one’s own age, a contemporary, in Attic ἡλῐκιώτης denoting equal in age or comrade (LSJ) ; παραδόσεων handing down or over, tradition, teaching, commandments (Mt 15:2-3, Mr &:5-13, Col 2:8), in NT era, this is teaching passed down by Pharisees, but rejected by Sadducees, applied to Christian teaching (2Th 2:15, 3:6) ; ὁ ἀφορίσας με…καὶ καλέσας aor. ptc. ; διὰ τῆς χάριτος αὐτοῦ διὰ+gen. denotes instrumen, means, or agency ; ἐν ἐμοὶ ordinary simple dative (BAGD IV.4.a) ; προσανεθέμην aor. mid. of προσανατίθημι, π. τινί is to consult with someone (BAGD), (perhaps submit them them?) ; σαρκὶ καὶ αἵματι a human being (in contrast to God and any other supernatural being), flesh/blood together – Mt 16:17, Eph 6:12, 1 Cor 15:50) ; Ἀραβίαν land E and S of Palestine, from Damascus (N) to Gaza (S) (NBD 66) ; Δαμασκόν Capital of Syria (Acts 9) .
